| Pronoun related trangst this time, and some good news |
[May. 16th, 2008|07:25 pm] |
Small amount of crap, I'm not so bothered about it, but it's still crap.
I had to go to the Accessible Transport Service in Camden Road to sort out my Freedom Pass today. (I'd wanted the post office to give me a new FP with my new name, but they couldn't do it because it said 'renewal' on the letter of authorisation not 'new'.) The woman I spoke to at the desk saw the Mr on the letter, and spoke to her colleague on the phone going 'he said this, he wants that' about me. But then she mentioned my old FP saying 'Ms' on it and then she was all 'she wants this, she said that'. Grr. As per bloody usual¹ I didn't say anything. Just a minor thing, but partly crushing.
Good news: I have my Freedom Pass back! This makes walking around London a lot safer for me and others, because if I start feeling uncomfortably aggressive I can just hop on a bus without worrying how much money I've got. Also free public transport in general around London is a swanky thing.
¹ Well, I say something sometimes. |

| Some of you make assumptions about me, and some of those are wrong. |
[May. 9th, 2008|06:46 pm] |
Assumption 1: I don't like people looking at me because I am a nervous person. Wrong! I am a huge attention-seeker. That's one of the reasons why my hair is often a green mohawk. That's why I'm happy to use an umbrella in the sun: the more people that look at me the better!
Assumption 2: I'm shy of strangers. Wrong! I'm much more shy of people I know and like than total strangers. However, a huge amount of familiarity makes me comfortable with someone. Going into a room full of people when I know 90% of them is terrifying sometimes. I seek your approval so much, people.
Assumption 3: Being naked in public makes me nervous. Wrong! I am an exhibitionist. I'm much more shy in a t-shirt and jeans. I get quite a thrill from being naked in front of other people, and I find it relaxing in some contexts.
So, dear reader, what incorrect assumptions do people make about you? |

| Trans male privilege question |
[May. 8th, 2008|10:10 am] |
I really shouldn't be thinking about this just before I'm supposed to leave the flat. The idea of me having male privilege as a guy who (at the moment) mostly gets seen as a butch lesbian¹ is quite difficult for me to grasp. I vaguely get my white privilege, my able-bodied privilege and possibly my smattering of class privilege, but male privilege?
More later, when I come back from doing stuff. If anyone can hit me with specific examples where I am privileged because of being male (though non-passing trans), I would be grateful.
¹ Again, nothing against butch lesbians. |

Are guarantee extensions on major appliances - namely washing machines - a good idea? Hotpoint are trying to sell me a two-year policy for £8.95 * 12 payments. Do I want this? Is it better value than crossing my fingers and shelling out for a washing machine repair person/parts if necessary? I hate this kind of gambling. I could lose out either way, and I don't know what to choose. I don't have many DIY skills, certainly not where washing machines are concerned.
Hm, I don't know if I'm going to listen to your advice, I'm thinking of the panic of having to do what brave_mercutio suggested in the comments and feeling quite light-headed.... usually I just throw money at a problem to deal with it.
I'm not going to BiFest btw. I have a date with duck474. I'll possibly bring her along to something like this at some point in the future, but not this time. |

| Voting and other ramblings |
[May. 1st, 2008|03:49 pm] |
I'm back online again, which is a good thing. When I was forced to do other things when my broadband was down, I realised just how dependant I am on the net for socialising and keeping myself amused. I think I'm getting myself over-stimulated by using my computer all times of the day and night though. I think I need to have more time doing other things, maybe even including meditation. I even chat with people on IM when I'm cooking FFS! (Chop some onions, go to laptop, crush some garlic, go to laptop etc.) I'll have at least an hour offline today.
One of the reasons why I can't really be vegan full-time is ( under the cut because it's rather TMI )
There was a guy asleep on the tube when I got on at the end of the line (Walthamstow). He didn't look like he was homeless, he was dressed in a fairly smart-casual way. His flies were undone though, and he had his hands down his underwear¹! I don't think he was faking being asleep, he snored from time to time. At one point it definitely looked like he was playing with himself. He was sprawled across two double seats.
Oh, I've voted. I really hope Boris doesn't get in, he cut mess up the transport system something chronic. *crosses fingers* I still find voting exciting, do you? I voted for Ken of course, I know which side my bus is buttered on.
In shopping news, I have a Wartenberg Pinwheel. I'm quite excited about using it at the weekend :-) I discovered a Cashconverters in Chapel Market, Angel. I bought 4 DVDs: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (with Johnny Depp), Monster, The Third Man, and Betty Blue. I've been looking for Betty Blue for *years*. I'll be buying more secondhand DVDs from there in the future. They have a four DVDs for £10 deal. I have almost no DVDs (or videos for that matter, but my video doesn't work), and am building up my collection. It's better value to own secondhand DVDs than rent them from the library.
¹ He was displaying about 3 inches of underwear above his belt, that is the way of things nowadays. |
